My Egyptian Expedition

My Egyptian Expedition By GREGORY LOTON

Visiting Egypt has always been my dream but I wasn’t prepared for the marvel of actually being there. I will never forget the steep climb up the narrow passage of the Great Pyramid of Giza to arrive at the King’s Tomb in this enormous 4,500 year old structure. This was only the first day of the tour and set the tone for the days which followed.

Every time I close my eyes, I see images of my amazing trip to Egypt with Scenic-hieroglyphics on massive ancient columns and the impressive pyramids dominating everything around them. The beautiful Nile flowing into the enormous damn at Aswan and looking left at Abu Simbel as we rounded the corner.

Flying over the magnificent tomb of Queen Hatshepsut and the Valley of the Kings by hot air balloon at dawn.

Walking through the streets of Old Cairo with the insistent souvenir sellers and smiling faces of people walking through the bazaars.

On this trip, I was so fortunate to stay at some of Egypt’s most famous hotels. The Marriott Mena House situated at the foot of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

My favourite, the Old Cataract Hotel on the banks of the Nile River at Aswan.

The Old Cataract Hotel has accommodated such luminaries as Tsar Nicholas II, Sir Winston Churchill, Princess Diana and Agatha Christie. In fact, this is where Agatha Christie wrote her famous novel “Death on the Nile”. And the filming of the 1978 movie starring Bette Davis, Maggie Smith, Mia Farrow and Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot.

Another highlight was spending 3 nights on board the Sanctuary Sun Boat III as we cruised up the Nile from Aswan to Luxor. This charming boat furnished with local touches making it one of the more elegant vessels on the river.

I suggest paying extra for higher cabin category so you have more room and larger windows to enjoy the beautiful scenery as villages, oases and mountain ranges roll by. The service and food on board the boat were great. And everyone was able to relax and enjoy the leisurely days cruising up the Nile

Traveling with an established company like Scenic is the best and safest way of experiencing all that Egypt has to offer. You will have the best accommodation, service, private access and security throughout the trip. The country has suffered many difficulties in recent years and is eager to get its tourism industry up and running again.
